Maui Whale Watching

About the Whales

Humpback Whales are one of the largest and most intelligent mammals on earth. They belong to the order Cetacea which also includes other whales, dolphins and porpoises. The official whale season on Maui is December 15th through May 15th.
The song of the Humpback is acclaimed for duration and complexity and you can hear them sing live while swimming in the waters of Maui during whale season. (TIP: Swim to the bottom in about 3 feet of water or deeper. Every foot makes an audible difference.)
You can also hear the Humpbacks singing live through your computer thanks to

The Whalesong Project

which has a special hydrophone placed below a buoy in the waters off Kihei. They can be seen from Luana Kai Resort almost every day during that time. During whale watches it is also common to see large sea turtles and sometimes dolphins.
  • Enchanted Learning – Humpback whale - Learn about Humpbacks and other whales at this user supported educational site. There are plenty of projects and printouts about Humpbacks and other whales for your keiki.
  • Pacific Whale Foundation - Offers whale watching with the experts. Pacific Whale Foundation has been working at protecting the whales for 24 years and a typical whale watch has a marine biologist or other whale expert on board narrating and teaching with hands on supplementary aids.

The Whale Watches

Although The pacific Whale Foundation cruises mentioned above are world famous, several other companies operate very enjoyable and informative whale watch tours.
  • Maui Princess Cruises - With three of the largest and fastest boats on Maui, the Lahaina Princess, Molokai Princess and Maui Princess also include expert narration and have the ‘Whale Cam &trad;’, a live underwater video feed that plays on several boat monitors. Due to the size of their boats these cruises are uncrowded. Japanese Translations available.
  • Gemini Charters - For a more intimate Whale Watching cruise check out the Gemini, a 64 foot sailing catamaran which includes a continental breakfast, whale hydrophone and professional Marine Naturalist narrating your adventure.
  • Maui Ecotours - Presents Whales! an intermediate adventure. Get right down to the water and be awed as the whales come to you. Imagine 20 to 40 tonnes of intelligent marine mammal up close and personal. Other marine life will also be clearly visible. Average groups of 3 to 4 couples and guide.

We know you’ll enjoy your stay and everyone here at Luana Kai Maui condo rental resort are happy to help you with recommendations on favorite activities, restaurants, beaches and anything else you want to do on Maui. Aloha!

Leslie & Luana Kai Staff,
I just wanted to send a BIG thank you for a wonderful stay at Luana Kai! All fourteen of my family members had an amazing time. We had so much fun playing shuffleboard, volleyball, soccer and of course lounging by the pool! Our condos were amazing! We stayed in A103, A303 & A307.
Most of us will be back in January 2011 for my Mom's 50th birthday! See you all then!

Hi Leslie,
I just wanted to take a moment to tell you that my wife and I had a wonderful time staying at Luana Kai last week. A101 was perfectly stocked and was a lovely location. We enjoyed being able to sit on the lanai with our coffee in the morning and our adult beverage in the evening watching the ocean and the folks in the park. Thank you again for allowing us to depart late due to our very late flight on Sunday evening. It basically gave us an additional day of vacation.

Please thank Mario again for helping us to jump start our car on Monday. Following his advice we were able to get a replacement through the rental agency with a minimum of trouble.

We were very sad to have to leave but we will certainly come back to visit again soon. I think we have found a permanent base camp on Maui.
Mahalo,
Leo and Chris Michael

Leslie,
It has been almost a month since we returned and are ready to come back. I cannot say enough good things about our vacation at Luana Kai. It is more beautiful and relaxing than the pictures show. The staff was extremely pleasant and helpful and went out of their way to direct us to different places to see and things to do. My daughter enjoyed it so much she is talking about having her wedding on Maui, assuming of course that her boyfriend asks her. With the exception of the airfare from New Jersey, vacationing at Luana Kai is cheaper than going to the New Jersey shore for a week for the same accommodations beachfront. We will be back. I not sure when, but we will return and recommend to anyone visiting Maui to stay at Luana Kai.
Sincerely,
Dennis, Lori and Allison Hunt
